Identifying Knowledge Management Myths (Skills for business online courses)

Hawaiian word of the day at the end of the blog.
Have you ever started something new—a sport or some hobby—thinking you could get up to speed pretty quickly because a friend said it was easy? How long did it really take? Did you succumb to any myths along the way?
Knowledge management, like many things in life, has its associated myths. Knowing what they are will help you avoid them. Getting knowledge management up and going takes diligence and care.
When knowledge management first hit the scene, it was hailed as a panacea for a lack of innovation or productivity. Many found that, as with other new business processes, implementing knowledge management wasn’t as simple as one-two-three.
Some found it to be a waste of time; others found it to be much more expensive than they’d anticipated.
On the other side of the coin, many companies have reaped very high rewards for their efforts.
Companies that did their planning wisely and avoided the myths were able to gain a solid footing with their knowledge management processes. They successfully captured and leveraged their knowledge for great benefit.
One way organizations stumble is believing the myths behind knowledge management. Myths are fictional stories, but many people have come to accept them as facts.
Some knowledge management myths have caused companies to go far down an implementation path only to discover their assumptions were based on folklore, not reality. Make sure you understand these myths, and don’t buy in to them.
Six of the myths surrounding knowledge management will be blogged tomorrow
